What Volleyball Has Taught Me

I’ve taken an interest in volleyball since about two years ago. However, I only ever acted on it this year when I finally tried out and made the team. Not only was it a completely drastic change, but it taught me a couple of valuable lessons worth sharing. Whether you’re already a seasoned athlete or considering joining a sports team, my journey with volleyball might inspire you to step onto the court.

Be a Team Player

Volleyball—or any sport, for that matter—is the epitome of teamwork. I quickly learned that it wasn’t just about my skills, but the harmony of the players together. The court will become your second home, and your teammates will become your family. Stay loyal and always have each other’s backs. Trust, communication, and support are the building blocks of any successful team.

The Power of Practice

Practice truly does make perfect. Whether it’s perfecting a serve, a spike, or a dive, the hours of dedication put into sharpening your skills pay off. I can confidently say that I’ve made serious progress during each practice, and I’ll only get better. It’s a reminder that success comes with consistency and a commitment to improving. And what better way to advance than now?

Embracing Failure

In volleyball, you’re guaranteed to face setbacks—missed serves, losing a game, or even an off day. But it’s in these moments that you learn the true meaning of resilience. You pick yourself up, analyze your mistakes, and come back stronger. Begin to cheer your team on more than ever, because everyone needs a little boost once in a while. Forget about everything else and just shake it off. Losses don’t distinguish your potential, so keep trying.

Time Management

As a student-athlete, having the ability to balance your time is no joke. Coming home from games late at night while still having to do an hour’s worth of homework is something I’m sure I don’t only struggle with. What helped me was making my own free time, prioritizing my studies, working during my free time, and leaving extra space for relaxation. It’ll take some time to adjust and catch up with a schedule, so just be patient.

Additionally, for those who are trying out, here are some tips to get you started:

  • Pursue a sport that you genuinely find passion in—don’t force yourself to do anything.
  • Coaches often disregard skill when your effort is on point. Always strive for the ball; you might just end up saving it.
  • Stick to your sport and don’t give up. Over time, you might not even realize how much you’re improving until you analyze your plays back.
  • Take your coaches’ and teammates’ advice to heart. They’re there to help guide you and get you to be the best. Be respectful and receptive.

In conclusion, volleyball has been an incredible ride. If you’re still thinking about joining a sports team, remember that it’s not just about the game. It’s about the growth, the friendships, and the unforgettable experiences that come with it. So lace up your shoes, grab a ball, and step onto the court!
