Expanding Your Vocabulary
It doesn’t matter what situation you find yourself in; having an advanced vocabulary is inarguably ideal. Some common examples you may implement are those painful English papers, major job interviews, or debates. You’re setting yourself an exemplary standard to maintain and uphold for success. Sounds like something you’d be interested in improving? Continue reading to see my suggestions on how to accomplish it.
Entertainment
By entertainment, I don’t mean watching just any television show like reality series’—if anything, it’ll worsen your vocab. I’m talking about indulging in beneficial practices. For instance, reading is a great source of entertainment that enhances your glossary. It exercises the brain and surely improves your literacy. By staying busy, enjoying yourself, and furthering yourself, you’re guaranteed to see results as long as you stay consistent. Another example could include listening to podcasts. This is slightly more accessible—plug in your headphones and play some fun podcasts wherever you are.
Games
It could be argued that this topic fits in with the previous, but this in particular has proved to do the job plenty. Most people need a break once in a while, and what better way to cool off than playing a relaxing game? Rather than traditional candy crushes, consider word puzzles. There are so many different ones to choose from, such as crosswords, cryptograms, riddles, or scrabbles. It’s fun, and it’s also helpful. You may not even realize that you’re studying new terms you’ve never seen before—even when you give up and press “show answers.”
Writing
One of the best features technology has provided us with is online, free dictionaries. Often, when we write long papers or even short blogs, we reread our work and are dissatisfied by the repetitive language. So what do we do? We go straight to the search bar and google “synonyms.” Believe it or not, as impractical as it is, it tends to assist in sharpening our vocab. I can confidently say that through the many years of online scouting, there are many words I use now that I associate with the internet because that’s where I recall them from. They provide you with just about any word you’re looking for, and when used enough, it’ll simply stick. My advice to you is, during your free time, write. Maybe it’s for a paper due or a random short story; it doesn’t matter. When you run it back, begin looking for synonyms for terms you think need replacing.
Vocabulary is such a big part of life, and it honestly says a lot about a person. People judge others, of course, based not only on the way they present themselves but also on the words they say. If you hear someone say a word you’ve never heard before, chances are, you too might raise an eyebrow. So, take these tips to heart and strive to raise someone else’s brows.
