Start a Club in College
Have you ever wondered why colleges care so much about extracurriculars? Colleges offer hundreds of extracurriculars, which they heavily encourage students to be involved in. Even with the quantity of clubs, universities still want students to start more. It doesn’t mean it’s an easy process, it still requires steps to initiate it into the school.
Create a purpose for the club that is something you’re passionate about, rather than just something you could put on your resume. Ask yourself questions like, what is your club’s goal or the type of influence you want to have on students?
Check out what students think about your club and whether they’re interested in joining. Schools require a minimum of participants who would hold the roles of president, treasurer, and so on. Club officials should be able to keep the base going.
You need a staff advisor that helps achieve the objectives of the club. Recommend involving staff that has knowledge in the area of your club that could offer more resources.
After you have all the details of the club finished, you can complete the registration. Whether the form is online or in the student life office you’ll include your name, officers, and advisor to officialize it and receive funding, resources, website, mailing address, and a room with equipment.
Afterward, you’ll typically have to write an official constitution for the club and complete the anti-hazing agreement. If you’re unfamiliar with hazing it’s like on shows when frats have an initiation process that threatens a person’s physical or mental health.
Club officers will have formal training to understand how to hold meetings, promote your club, create agendas, develop budgets, etc.
The best part is holding your first meeting and making it memorable. Create icebreakers and make connections with your members. Keep spreading flyers and promoting it on social media. Patience is key when you’re building a club because it’ll take time for you to grow a base.
