Dos and Don’ts of Time Management
Why does it seem like some people have 48 hours a day even though we all have the same 24 hours? One reason is because they have good time management skills. Time management is a crucial skill to have in our lives, and is a life skill we can use from studying to working.
Here are a few tips for time management:
Do’s:
- Create a To-do list: Having a To-do list can help us stay organized and ensure we don’t miss any deadlines.
- Take breaks: Taking regular breaks can help us stay focused and productive. It can help us recharge energy and maintain productivity.
- Set priorities: A perfectionist would want to complete all tasks with high quality, but in reality, it can be challenging. We should learn to accept that sometimes we don’t have enough time and energy to complete all tasks. Start by identifying the most important tasks and prioritize them.
- Get enough sleep each day: The athlete Eileen Feng Gu sleeps 10 hours a day because health is the basic of everything. One of our to-do list items can be to get 8-10 hours of sleep each night for a full week.
- Staying focused: Staying 100% focused when doing all tasks is a productive habit. It is best to stay fully focused on the task at hand while studying, and fully relax during breaks to avoid distractions. Therefore, we won’t have to think about studying or work when it is time to relax.
- Two-minute rule: If a task takes less than 2 minutes, such as laundry and taking out the trash, do it immediately to avoid accumulation of all the tasks and not being able to do any of them later.
Don’ts
- Set unrealistic goals: The point of setting goals is to accomplish them and motivate ourselves. Setting unrealistic goals will not only overwhelm us but also lead to disappointment. In that way, setting goals will only have a negative impact on achieving our goals.
- Procrastinate: Procrastinating is one of the most common mistakes and the most significant time-waster. Instead, we should prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency.
- Multitask: Psychology has proved that we only focus in on one particular stimulus in our environment. Not only does it reduce productivity, it can also increase our stress levels.
- Get distracted: Avoid frequent phone distractions, as the temporary happiness they bring can lead to more stress.
In conclusion, effective time management can help us maintain productive habits and achieve our goals. With the right mindset and habits, we can make the most of our time and have “48 hours a day”.
